Genetics!
Family genetics is the highest contributing factor to developing varicose veins. Although you can’t do anything about your genetics, you can take several steps to decrease symptoms of varicose veins. Symptoms such as pain, swelling, restless legs and itching are all associated with venous reflux and varicose veins.
Exercise regularly.
Exercise improves your blood circulation. If you sit all day at work, you should make exercise a priority during your free time. Regular exercise can strengthen your heart, improving blood flow throughout your veins.
Watch your weight.
Obesity is a major contributing factor for symptoms related to varicose veins. Extra weight adds pressure to your veins and increases your likelihood of your symptoms of varicose veins being more severe. According to the Mayo Clinic Health System, losing just 10% of your body weight can make a difference.
Wear compression stockings.
Compression stockings help relieve the symptoms of varicose veins. They improve circulation and are a common treatment for varicose vein patients. It is important to wear compression stockings that properly fit you. Speak with your healthcare provider before you purchase stockings at a medical supply store.
Elevate your legs.
Raising your legs above your heart for 15 minutes has been shown to improve circulation and reduce your symptoms of varicose veins. This can easily be done lying on a bed with a pillow propping up the legs.
Memphis Vascular Center is here to help you with all of your varicose vein needs. There are several minimally invasive treatment options if your varicose veins do not respond to these tips.
